Every Playoff Pitch

On the 22-Foot Wall, Sound Up

For two days this week, both Chicago teams were in the postseason at the same time, and the dining room at Simple EJ’s in St. Charles split right down the middle. The Cubs’ side has gone quiet. The Sox side has not. Here is where and when to watch the rest of October in the Fox Valley.

Yes. Every White Sox postseason game is on the 22-foot LED wall at Simple EJ’s Kitchen & Tap in St. Charles, with the broadcast audio up through the stadium sound system, not muted in a corner. Simple EJ’s is a sports restaurant, not a bar with a TV, so the game is the room’s main event from first pitch to the last out.

The White Sox swept the Astros in the Wild Card round and open the American League Division Series against the Guardians as the sixth seed. The first two games are in Cleveland, then the series comes to Chicago.

The LED wall at Simple EJ’s in St. Charles is 22 feet across, the biggest in the Midwest, backed by a stadium-quality sound system. There are additional screens throughout the room, so a table on the patio side or near the bar still has a clear look at the game.

of LED wall. A 98 mile-an-hour fastball is life-sized, and the strike zone box is bigger than your kitchen TV.

No, and you cannot make one. Simple EJ’s is walk-in only for parties of 7 or fewer, seated first come, first served from a waitlist at the host stand. Walk in, give the host your name and a cell number, and you get a text when the table is ready. There is no app or link to join from home. Groups of 8 or more email groups@simpleejs.com with the date and headcount, and the table is held before you arrive. The full system is explained in how game day seating works at Simple EJ’s.

For Saturday’s Game 1 at noon, the practical move is to come for brunch. Simple EJ’s serves brunch Saturday and Sunday from 10 to 2, with bottomless mimosas and a Bloody Mary bar, so a table claimed at 11 is a table you keep through the ninth inning. The list is first come, first served, so put your name in by 11 and you are seated before the anthem.

Game 2 on Monday, October 5 at 4 pm. Kids eat free at Simple EJ’s Monday through Friday from 4 to 6 pm with an adult entree, which means first pitch and the kids-eat-free window start at the same minute. The room is family friendly by default until 8 pm, and Charlie the mascot works the floor on weeknights, so a school-night playoff game is a real plan instead of a compromise.

Family by day, grown-ups after dark. Early innings belong to everyone. After 8 pm the room shifts to an adults-curated feel, which for a 4 pm start means roughly the eighth inning on. Plan the family visit for Game 2 and the Founders Club night for Game 3.

A Cubs fan in mourningWheneverNobody will make you talk about it

The Cubs lost their Wild Card Series to the Padres two games to none, with the final game ending 4 to 1 on September 30. For most of this week both Chicago teams were alive, which is rare enough that Simple EJ’s ran both broadcasts side by side. Cubs fans are still welcome for every Sox game, and the room is split enough that nobody will give you a hard time for the hat.

The kitchen at Simple EJ’s is scratch-made, so game food here is actual food. The smashburgers come from a special blend made exclusively for Simple EJ’s, the wings are brined and double-fried, and the house Simple Sauce goes on anything you point at. The full menu with prices is at simpleejs.com/menu. A table of four splitting wings and burgers through nine innings is the standard play.

For anyone in St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia, or South Elgin who wants the Sox playoff games on a screen bigger than a car with the sound actually on, Simple EJ’s at Fox Haven Square is the practical pick: every game on the 22-foot wall, free parking right outside, a first come first served list at the door, and a kitchen that does not come out of a freezer. It is just off Route 64 and Kirk Road, a short drive from any of those towns.

Yes. The ALCS, NLCS, and World Series all run on the wall whether or not the Sox are still in it, and this page gets updated for each round. If your out-of-market team is playing, ask a server and the staff will do everything they can to get it on a screen.

Two Chicago teams made October. One is still playing. The wall is 22 feet either way.
